extra credit

1. Explain what happened to the man that was killed by the subway and how the photographer was able to take the photo. the man was pushed unexpectedly and the photographer was there and took the photo.

2. Why did the photographer say he took the photo? He said that the photo was accidental.

3. Do you think the photographer should have taken the photo?i don't think he should of taken the photo, because thats something terrifying to see as a cover shot.

4. Do you think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation? Why or why not? no, if the photographer had enough time to take the photo, he would of had enough time to save his life.

5. Do you agree or disagree with the decision to run the photo on the front page of the New York Post? Explain why or why not.
i disagree with the cover photo, because nobody wants to see this accident happen.6. What is more important to a photojournalist, capturing images of life as it happens or stopping bad things from happening? Why or why not? I think its stopping bad things from happening, because they could save someones life, and that a great photo they could capture of them.

7. Do you think it is ever ethically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation that he or she photographs? to me it could be either way, because if he takes the photos, then eventually he's already involved.

8. Should photojournalists always avoid influencing events as they happen? i don't think always, because maybe good things could happen too.

9. After reading the responses from the professional photographers, what stands out as the most appropriate response for a photographer to this situation. to me the quote that stood out was "its very important for the public to remember that journalists play an important role and that they can often perform an important public service"

lytro warm-up

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo? the photo zoomed in and you could see more clearly.
2. How does this new camera work?it makes objects look more clear.
3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take this kind of photo (remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about) you need to know how to zoom in the manual focus.
4. Is it worth the money? to me its worth the money you spend on this new camera.

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully) they made the neck longer, and the eyes bigger, and they fixed the hair of the model.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not? to me i don't think its right because, their taking away her natural beauty, and making something unreal.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation? i think yes it does, because maybe the model didn't want that.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't? i think the changing the way the hair positioning is, thats OK, but when you change their body and other natural things thats when its not okay.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
fashion photography, is used for many things like advertisements, products, and beauty things, and you HAVE to make it perfect, by editing it. photography is more natural (in some cases) and its used in many different meanings.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?i think its what type of camera you have and how you use it, rather than just "taking" the pictures. it takes practice.

self portraits and portraits part 2

If you’re taking photos in a studio, use a mannequin for light testing, Much easier than guesstimating!
Have fun with it.Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative.

If you set up the shot and you decide on the lighting and camera position and what you are doing, but get someone else to push the shutter, it’s still a self portrait.

The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects.

Image quality depends on more than a sensor. It is also affected by lens quality and the image processing done inside the camera.

you'll always have a willing subject, and you may be able to interpret the "real you" better than others can.

You might try focusing at an object that's the same distance as the distance from the camera to the reflection, lock in the focus, recompose the image to include yourself, and take the picture.

environmental portrait- i choose this picture because, i like the colors and how its layer out in the picture.
photography self portraits- i choose this picture because its very creative.

casual portrait- i choose this picture because, its a very casual and beautiful photo.

For my self portrait i will take a photo of my friend. i will shoot her outside, in the weather that is that day. i will take different angles of the picture, and different locations to see were it bets fits the background of the photo, but its going to be outside.

american soldier slide show and captions

What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why? i think picture #66 is the most powerful, because it shows when he's actually doing something in the army.
B. Through the photos, Ian is in different locations, each set of photos from the same location comprise a short series or set.

Set #1 At home in Denver - Tell me which image #s from image #1 to image #?? #1, #5,#6
Set #2 At Basic Training - tell me which image #s from image #?? to image #??#16,#20,#21
Set #3 In Iraq - tell me which image #'s from image #?? to image #??#51,#58,#61
Set #4 Back in Denver - tell me which image #s from image#?? to image #??#72,#73,#74

Which set of images was the most powerful? Why? i think the most powerful are sets 3, because being in Iraq is something scary, and knowing he took a risk in being in the army to go their, is something to look up to.
c. How do the images work together to tell a story? It shows everything he had to go thorough just to be in the army, and the pictures leds up to that.
 B. How do the captions enhance the photographs? They help know the viewers what their looking at.

image #76
Ian, is being welcomed home with a banner, because of his long trip away from home with the army at Iraq.

 A. How do these other features enhance the photographs? I think it makes the pictures more real.
B. In what ways are videos better than photographs? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site. in the videos it showed "in their own voices, words and sometimes tears"
C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site
it creates a solid image.

aperture, shutter speed, ISO- how do they all work?

 1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? the eyes.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture less light, the higher the Aperture more light.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field? it helps by focusing on one subject, and making the background blurry.

 1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which was earlier this month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:
At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
a.) the dunking booth- fast shutter speed
b.) the food eating contest-slow shutter speed
c.) the rock climbing wall- low shutter speeds
d.) someone working at a booth- slow shutter speed
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle- slow shutter speed
f.) the Diamonds performance.-slow shutter
Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
a.) the dunking booth- slow shutter
b.) the food eating contest- slow shutter speed
c.) the rock climbing wall- low shutter speeds
d.) someone working at a booth- slow shutter speed
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle- slow shutter speed
f.) the Diamonds performance.- long shutter speed
2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website.
set the the camera on Auto, when you shoot in "aperture priority" mode, you set the lens aperture, and the camera automatically sets the shutter speed.

 1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? it increases the sensitivity of your camera.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO? you can capture low ISO pictures without the flash.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?it comes at a expense, and adds grain or "noise" to the pictures.
 tell me which ones look the best for F4, F5.6 F8, F11, F16, F22.
F4- 1/60 F5.6- 1/60 F8-1/30 F11-1/30 F16-1/15 F22-1/8
F4- the background is blurry and its only focused on the couple.
F5.6- the background is still blurry but you can almost see the image.
F8- the background is almost getting clear.
F11- you can tell what the background is.
F16- the background is still a little bit blurry.
F22- the background is clear and you can definitely see the background.

Finally, what is happening to the people themselves at slow Shutter Speeds? What could the photographer do to help combat this problem? What is the lowest Shutter Speed do you think a photographer can hand-hold the camera? the couples were white faded at first, and then the picture started to recover. i think changing the time and F-stop could help with the problem of the picture.

i think i did well on this test, but i know i could of done better.

abandoned theme parks

1. i would go to Lincoln park, because it sounds very scary. In this park their were a lot of casualties, like the wooden roller coaster, although the coaster was the ultimate in cool, it also turned out to be deadly as well. Now the park is now in ruins, and no one goes their anymore, because it is closed.
 i would like to go to;
1. Disney land
2. Mckenny falls
3. China
4. The eiffel tower in paris
5. Las vegas
5. i would love to document this location because, i always wanted to go to paris and see the eiffel tower. What inspires me is the culture of paris, they live differently, and thats one of the many pictures i want to take if i ever go their. What i expect their is peoples languages, and how they dress, and the food the people eat their. But out of all the places, i would really like to visit and do a documentary of the eiffel tower.
6.i would definitely have to older in order to go to paris. What i would need as far as equipment is a cannon camera, a camera holder, and a laptop. i would have to raise money for the plain ticket, a hotel room, and expenses ect. But i would be lucky if i had all of this so i can go and take pictures their.

Great black and white photographers part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? What caught my eyes is that the photos were interesting and not boring.
2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.
I see the subject very clear.
I smell the clear air that was back in the day in the generation of the photo.
I hear the old fashioned cars going to the near gas station.
I taste the coca cola soda from the store in the picture.
I feel the hot air standing outside.
3.) what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer. Ideas include, posters, power points, a blog, etc. You tell me what you would like to create so we can come up with a plan to share your thoughts and ideas about your photographer with your classmates and with the rest of the school.
What i would like is blog of all my photography photos, like the one i have in this class, but instead to show my work and include all my different project from outside of school, for example; like a filed trip, or a family vacation.

Funny captions

chris is playing in austin, he is yelling because the other team scored a goal. chris's teammates should calm him down for the rest of the game.
on a sunday morning, carl is showing of his cake car to the San Antonio newspaper. But at the end of the interview, he hated to share with the journalists.
At the middle of the night on monday, Aby starts to make angry faces, because she is hungry. Aby's mom should hurry and get her baby bottle.

3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? i think its very clear to the people to know what this subject is.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? What i would have done differently is get a different angle so that the "frame" looks better.

Africa and Mural project preview

This is my favorite photo of Nick Brandt because, the way he took this picture is amazing. I specially love the way the wind blowing on his fur. In this picture the photographer is using simplicity as one of the rules, because he only focuses on the lion.

Nick Brandt-
What kind of camera did he use? He used a Pentax 6711
What is his reason for taking the photos? for a trilogy of books to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of east africa.
What is his hope by taking these types of photos? his hopes were to take photos to record visually poetic last testament to the wild animals.
what he said about the pictures were; " you wouldn't take a portrait of a human being from a hundred feet away and expect to capture their spirit; you'd move in close."

next;
1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?  i think we should make a funny theme, so it can make people laugh and make peoples day more better just by looking at the mural.
2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones? i think we should use our regular camera phones, because maybe other people don't have phones.
3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus? I would want the mural on the front of the school.

avoiding mergers

Academic shoot reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules i set out for you? the challenges i had were to get the right rules in some classrooms.
2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding, the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. My technical aspects were holding the camera right or putting the focus right.
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? i would take more basic pictures about the rules, so it can be easier.
4. What things would you do the same? i would still go to the soccer class, but i would take better pictures.
5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve? To me the easiest to shoot is simplicity, because i had no problem taking a picture of that rule.
6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture? i think the hardest is rules of thirds, because i really had a hard time finding that one.
7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is? To me whats not clear is the rule of balance. because its very confusing and i had the most trouble with that.

Balance

1. How well did you follow the rule? i think i could of done better with the rule.
2. What is the subject? The subject was the 8th period soccer class playing in the football field.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? i think it is clear for the people to know what the subject is because it is very simple.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? what i would of done better is position of the photo.

the rule of thirds

1. How well did you follow the rule? i think i could of done better with the rule.
2. What is the subject? the subject is the half part of the field is waiting for the ball.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? to me honestly its kind of difficult for people to figure out what the subject is.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? i would of made the subject more clear.

simplicity

1. How well did you follow the rule? I think i did follow this rule, because i did everything simplicity expects in a photo.
2. What is the subject? The subject is this guy waiting for the other guys to pass him the soccer ball at their scrimmage.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? To me i think people would be able to tell what this rule is.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? I think i could of changed the background, to just focus on the guy in the picture.

lines

1. how well did you follow the rule? I think i did pretty good following the rule, because if you zoom in close to the picture, you can see intersecting lines, but the color doesn't make it noticeable.
2. What is the subject? the subject is the mural that has 3-D lines on it, which makes the mural more creative.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? i hope people can know what the subject is, because you can see the lines clearly.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? what i would of done, is to zoom in more on the mural to show the lines better.

favorite photo of community service section

My favorite photo from Academics and community service is, one thats called "scales of time" its about a cheerleader hugging a little girl.
1. Why did you pick this photo? I picked this photo because to me it was the most interesting, and i was a cheerleader in middle school, and i really like pictures about those kind of sports.
2. What rules of photography are evident in the photo? The rule that this photo used was simplicity, because it only focused on one thing.

1. Where do you think you could take photos like the ones you look at today? i think i can take the similar photos outside, or in a regular classroom.
2. Whose classroom would you like to visit and take photos in? i would like to take the photos in soccer class, or in dance class.
3. What will you do, as the photographer, to get amazing photos like you look at today? What i would do is take my time to take the photos, and to make sure to take amounts of photos so i can chose my best ones.

Filling the frame

To me this picture shows good frame because, it really focuses on just the girl reading books, instead of the rest of the picture.

Action and Emotion

This picture to me shows the best action and emotion because the girl is helping out in environmental service.

The story

This photo tells the best story because, a lot of people are taking the time to help out in community service.

post shoot reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 3 prompts( Red, metal, happy) my challenges were to find that one picture that stood out the most.
2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, ect.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Providing a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. To me the technical aspects were holding the camera right because I've never used a professional camera before and i didn't knew what i was doing.
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? What i would of done differently was take different angles of the photo.
4. What things would you do the same? I would take the same pictures, because i really liked them.
5. What rules of composition did you end up actually achieving? did you have any? I did framing in one of my pictures which was the Red photo.
6. Are you interested in shooting these prompts again, why? I am interested because now that i know more of the rules, i can actually shoot photos better than the last time.

Avoiding mergers

i chose this picture for avoiding mergers because it cancels the rest of the body of the lady on the right, and that is not a good picture, it is a merger.

Framing

i chose this photo for framing because if you look at the walls, it makes a square which makes a perfect frame for this picture showing the inside of the twin towers.

Balance

i chose this photo for balance because the way the buildings are make a lot of shapes. and it balances out the picture.

lines

i chose this photo for lines, because the way you use lines is to help you define the specific picture you use. In this picture it shows one of the twin towers being destroyed by the airplane, and showed clearly the buildings lines.

The rule of thirds

i chose this photo for rules of thirds because it shows windows and to me it really helps to space out any necessary thing.

Simplicity

i chose this photo for simplicity because in the other photos that was similar to this one, didn't focus on just one object, but this one does, with only one of the twin towers.
